When to approach a Rheumatologist
In case of any of the following features, it might be advisable to consult a Rheumatologist for further evaluation
- In case of joint pains with joint swellings and stiffness, especially worse in the morning and night time.
- Joint pains which are affecting the quality of life and reducing functional ability.
- If you develop lower back pain which frequently waking up at night and worse on lying down.
- History of joint pains and swellings with a history of psoriasis or a family history of psoriasis.

History of recurrent painful red eye with lower back pain or joint pains with swellings.
If having a painful red eye, you need to consult an Ophthalmologist first. - Sudden severe pain with swelling in any joint with complete movement restriction.
- Rapidly worsening joint pains after a recent infection.
- Butterfly shaped rash over the cheeks with hair fall, joint pains with swellings with a history of symptoms worsening after sun exposure.
- White or blue color change in the fingers when exposed to cold like when washing clothes or utensils.
- Dry eyes and dry mouth.
- Sudden onset muscle weakness in the muscles of the shoulder, buttocks and thighs especially associated with purplish rash over the face.
- Any symptoms for which you have been asked to consult a Rheumatologist.
In case a diagnosis is made which requires long term treatment, medication should be taken promptly and regularly. Regular follow up with your doctor is advised.
